About Us
The idea of an international violin competition is exciting. Prizes are alluring, but the potential prestige that a competitor may obtain is by far the greatest prize of all. Performing well in an international competition can help the winners obtain opportunities to perform and assist them in securing recording contracts.
The Stradivarius International Violin Competition is an independent non-profit organization. The event is currently produced and funded by Charles W. Liu Fine Violins.
How is it that a relatively modest violin shop has decided to host and sponsor an event of this magnitude and caliber?
Our musical community in the Salt Lake region is both active, and remarkably skilled. Our symphony orchestra has achieved international status, and our youth express surprisingly mature musical focus and development. Utah's love of the arts has created a supportive environment for music, and the music we produce enhances the overall artistic experience and range of expression for anyone who wishes to live creatively.
As a result, our violin shop is flourishing. We are a shop of violin makers. The love of violins (and related instruments) has always been our primary interest and motivation. We believe that it is because of this passion that we are receiving such positive attention from the musical community. It is only natural that we should begin to explore ways of using our resources to repay that community in some way for the support we have received.
We realize that by creating an event that would bring out the best in the international music community we could do something for those who have supported us. We feel that it is a natural progression to give the finest young players in the world a chance to visit a place that appreciates their efforts and, in the process, help the competitors have an experience that they will treasure throughout their lives. The most skilled will, of course, come away with the honors and prizes that express appreciation for the hard work and skill they have developed.
For the younger participants, (aged 10-16 years), we have endeavored to provide a competition that is both challenging and supportive. While there are excellent prizes available, the positive experience of competing will be our greatest focus.
In short, we wish to discover the greatest violin talents of tomorrow. We take pleasure in the musical accomplishment of our youth throughout the world, and we wish to provide everyone with an opportunity to discover these talents as early as possible. It is our way of saying "Thank you".
